    You Bought PIM but Overlooked the User

     

    The real reason your growth tools are shelfware, and you are wasting money... and time.

     

    Let’s look at your data for a second. You’re probably paying for a PIM. Your IT organization is supporting a system that users don’t like and don't want to use!

     

    You bought the PIM with good intentions. You saw the demo. You saw the potential. You thought, “This is how we finally scale our data programs.”

     

    But if you are honest, users are working outside of PIM with what they are most familiar with: Excel. Each business unit is doing their own thing, and there is no unified enterprise approach.

    This is the problem nobody mentions in the software demo. A platform alone is not a solution.  Every tool you buy creates a job. It creates a need for an operator.

    • Clean and stage the data
    • Design steady state process flows and orchestrate users so data changes hands seamlessly
    • Update the strategy when things stop working

    The Three Bad Options

     

    When product management and marketing leaders realize they have an “Operator Gap,” they usually panic and do one of three things.

     

    1. They hire a vendor. These groups promise to take it off your plate. But they often attack granular data without a strategic approach. They try to clean up your data and avoid PIM shortcomings by doing the work outside of the system.

     

    2. They find internal workarounds. Working outside of PIM means the work is disconnected from the data master, there is no master taxonomy controlling the item data work, and there is no global approach across programs and spreadsheets get passed around the business.

     

    3. They give up and leave bad data in the PIM. They accept that their taxonomy isn't fit for their purposes, and they tell resources - who don't have the time - to struggle to slowly update and remediate data on the side...which is such a huge task that it never gets completed.
