A Brief Introduction

Today most manufacturers find it challenging to locate a specific part that they either make or buy. These same companies are even more challenged locating the relevant documents for a part; whether it is testing data, determining what projects are allowed to use a part, or the list of approved substitute parts. Convergence Data Services is a software company that provides a much better way to manage parts and the items that are commonly associated with parts including: documents, drawings, people, programs, or suppliers.

Convergence has created a novel approach that makes it very easy for companies to structure their data and to create and maintain relationships between critical pieces of information. The solution is DFR™ (Design for Retrieval™). DFR uses adaptive database technology to manage complex relationships between items. DFR makes it easier for the non-IT professional to set up data models for part information. Convergence’s SmartFind™ search tool provides multiple ways to query complex engineering data to quickly find exactly what you need quickly, leveraging the data model created by DFR. Together both solutions can help eliminate today’s challenge of finding the right item, using preferred parts and duplication.

How can Convergence impact your typical day?

A person conducts a SmartFind search on a part based on its characteristics: dimensions, performance criteria, material, etc., and finds a preferred part (without knowing the part number). Clicking on the related document attribute for that part, the person also finds the test documents associated with that part. The person is delighted that searching took seconds versus minutes and hours; actually finding something.

Today’s reality – a person has to ask other engineer’s for a part number to find a part. (Part numbers and limited descriptions are frequently the only search criteria.) The person checks several databases and conducts several searches with either a 0 item’s returned search result, or a large unmanageable search result. The person is sadly delayed after hours of searching. Giving up, the person creates a new part resulting in duplication.
